We can oftentimes go through the motions in our weekdays, looking forward to "finishing" each day and living towards our weekends, or the next time we can go on holiday, wishing away the mundane days... I myself am definitely guitly of "wishing away" my workweeks and living toward the weekend. Something about the routine of my Monday-to-Friday can oftentimes lead to me living on autopilot, crossing off each day as if it is written down on some imaginary to-do list and saving my time and oftentimes also my joy only for the weekends... If you can relate, this blog post is for you!
Here are some tips on how to romanticize and start loving your weekdays and start living in the moment, rather than living toward the end of the week, wishing away precious days. Those are all things that have helped me (and are still helping me) a lot and maybe they might help you too :)
1: Do something that brings you joy daily
Ideally, 3 things a day that bring you joy, peace, or a relaxation.
This can be something as little as having your favorite cup of tea, or watching an episode of your favorite series. Make a list of at least 15-20 things you enjoy doing while doing them and after. (For example: Scrolling through Instagram Reels for hours might feel good in the moment, but it most likely won´t feel good after.)
Doing something that brings me joy daily has literally changed my life!
If you feel like you don´t have time, pick something from your list that requires little to no time at all! Whenever I feel like I don´t have time to do self-care, I try implementing it into my daily routine through listening to one of my favorite podcasts for example and sometimes I sneak in an episode or two while doing some rather mundane tasks at work too (pssst, don´t tell my boss haha ;)
Having a list of things you enjoy doing and being able to pick something from that list daily can help give you something to look forward to each day and prevent the "wishing away your days" trap we can all so easily fall in to.
You are worthy of spending time on yourself!
2: Stop to notice the little things around you
This is something that was definitely hard for me at first, because I was so used to just going through my days no-stop, but what I now intentionally do is drop whatever I´m doing whenever I can to just look around me and search for something "whimsical".
Today this was a flower I found blooming on the ground in our yard when I was doing the dishes and the pidgeon that likes to hang out next to the house. I look at the flower and the pidgeon as if they´re some sort of magical beings I´ve never seen before.. As weird as that might sound, looking at "ordinary" things in that way has made everything in life feel so much more magical to me and honestly, when did we decide that the creation of something as beautiful as a flower and the existance of a little animal that can fly and sing isn´t magical!?
3: Listen to your body
Sometimes we just need a break and that is okay.
When we are burnt out, all the self-care in the world won´t do much if we are also depleated at the same time. It is okay to rest.
I used to be so afraid of being "lazy" that I would completely work myself to the ground. Always moving, always doing something. I would only truly allow myself to rest guilt-free when I was sick, so my body made me sick many times to get me to rest. Whenever I would actually let myself "rest" it would still need to be something productive I´m doing, like watching an informative show, or listening to an educational podcast. Never really something I would do just for my own enjoyment... Writing this out makes me see that that definitely was not healthy (in my opinion). It was a never-ending cicle...
It wasn´t until I worked on my mindset around "laziness" before I was able to let myself rest fully and honestly, some days I still struggle with this, but I´m getting better every day.
If you can relate, I want you to know that you are NOT lazy for resting. Your body needs rest. We were not made to be on full-speed productivity-level 24/7... It´s okay to leave things undone. You are not a failure for needing to turn it down a notch. We are human beings, not machines.
Contrarily, sometimes what we really need is movement.
Especially when working an office job, we can feel exhausted even though we haven´t moved our bodies. I have noticed that, whenever I take a walk right after sitting at the office all day, I feel sooo much better! Ideally, I might even go on a run (which doesn´t happen very often at the moment haha).
If you have the time, joining workout-classes can be a very helpful way to give your body the movement it needs and they can be a lot of fun too!
4: Decorate your space
Decorating your work-space and making it your own is such a lovely way to make it feel a little more special.
I love bringing candles and flowers and putting those on my desk. It makes my day feel that tad bit more romantic, or as Ann Shirley would say: "romantical" and I love it :)
If you are out and about, maybe what you could do is "decorate" yourself, like putting on some jewelry you love, or wearing one of your favorite outfits to work (if you are able to do that). Anything that makes your work-days feel more special to you is worth doing.
